The following are a few Bible verses that have really stood out to me these past couple of months. It’s getting increasing harder to not be distracted by the “shiny lights” that we find in today’s world. These verses help to remind me and keep me focused on what’s important and also uplift me on those days where nothing seems to be going right.
1) Matthew 5: 14-16 (NLT)
You are the light of the world – like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
When we live our lives for Christ we show others what Christ is like. Don’t be afraid of showing people what you believe in because of what they may think or say. Even business leaders will tell you that you can’t make everyone happy so don’t even try. Don’t hide your faith!
2) James 1: 5-6 (NLT)
If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do – ask Him and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask Him be sure that you really expect Him to answer, for a doubtful mind is an unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
When we have hard decisions to make our first response should be to go to God for help. We are so blessed to have a God that cares – that wants to be a part of our everyday lives. Ask and expect a response! Doubt leaves you unsettled like waves in the ocean so rely on God to show you what is best for you. Ask and you will receive and then your decisions will be sure and solid.
3) Romans 12:2 (NLT)
Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is.
In today’s society where “self” is promoted above all and everywhere you turn philosophies from Hinduism, New Age and others are pushed, it’s sometimes hard not to get sucked in. The only way to ensure that we keep on the right track is to daily dive deep into God’s word. Just because society says it’s so doesn’t make it so. Look deep into yourself and ask the question “Am I supporting or participating in something that goes against what God says?”
4) Proverbs 30:2 (NLT)
Every word of God proves true. He defends all who come to Him for protection. Do not add to His words or He may rebuke you and you will be found a liar.
This particular verse is one of the ones I have on my prayer wall. I say it often to remind myself that as I navigate in this world I have to be diligent and on guard that I view this world through the Bible and not the other way around. Every word of God proves true means we can’t pick and choose what we want to believe – what suits our wants and needs. The Bible is our only source of authority so when we base what we believe on our feelings and experiences we are easily be led in the wrong direction.
5) James 4: 2-3 (NLT)
…And yet the reason you don’t have what you want is that you don’t ask God for it. And even when you do ask, you don’t get it because your whole motive is wrong – you want only what will give you pleasure.
Are you struggling in your business or some other aspect of your life? Have you brought the problem to God and have asked Him for help? Are you praying for something that you know is in God’s will or not so much?
I find this verse uplifting because God is telling us that He wants to help us – we need only ask. God is also being honest about why He hasn’t answered certain prayers – we have the wrong mindset. Getting to know God means knowing His will and when you pray in God’s will your prayers will be a lot more effective.
6) Luke 10:19 (NLT)
And I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.
Know who your enemy is – John 10:10
Know who you’re fighting against – Ephesians 6:12
Know you’re armour – Ephesians 6:13-18
And know that through Jesus we have the authority and power over all the enemy! That’s powerful stuff!!
So when you’re having a bad day and nothing is going right, read over the above verses and know that the enemy has already lost – rebuke him in the name of Jesus!
7) James 3: 14-16 (NLT)
But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your hearts, don’t brag about being wise. That is the worst kind of lie. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and motivated by the devil. For whenever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and every kind of evil.
I added this one because we are so inundated in business and in life with selfish motives. Business leaders, mentors, masterminds you name it pushes for people to attain the life they’ve always wanted which in my experience usually focuses on material gains and personal elevation. If you look at the definition of “self-ambition” you see why God says you’ll find every kind of evil.
Self-Ambition – is an earnest desire for some type of achievement or distinction, as power, honor, fame, or wealth, and the willingness to strive for its attainment. It means to be self-seeking and always looking out for one’s own interests above the interests of anyone else.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t have goals but we need to keep tabs on why we’re doing what we’re doing. Is it for God’s glory or our own?
8) Philippians 4: 6-7 (NLT)
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Having a healthy prayer life is so important and probably why satan makes it so difficult for people to get in a routine of doing it (myself included). Spend time with God like you would a spouse or best friend. After a good prayer session with God I feel energetic, uplifted and joyful – isn’t that a great way to start the day. J And who doesn’t crave a peace beyond human understanding!
9) Matthew 18: 19-20 (NLT)
I also tell you this: If two of you agree down here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together because they are mine I am there among them.
Do you have at least one other person that you can pray with or pray for you? Having people in your life that believe what you believe and that you can count on to pray for you is very important. The BibIe tells us that fellowship with other Christians is very important. Sometimes we might not want to let people know when we’re having problems in business or in life but having a prayer buddy will help you on those down days, inspire you on other days and overall help keep you strong and going forward.
10) Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)
Don’t be afraid for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
Oh man, when I read this Bible verse I can feel my insides go to mush! I literally feel God’s love for me. I am never alone. I have nothing to fear. He strengthens me. He helps me. I don’t need to be distressed or dismayed because Jesus tells me his yoke is light and I will find rest for my soul (Matthew 12:28-30). I have a God that loves me, wants a personal relationship with me and wants me to succeed. What could be better!
On those crazy days where nothing is going right sit back, take a deep breath and read this verse. Let it sink into your heart that God is in control and He’s got you covered!
So, there you have it! My top ten Bible verses that not only help me navigate in the business world and in life but also stay focused on what’s important and who’s really in charge.
If you have a favourite Bible verse that helps you out I would love to hear it (can never have enough :)) so please share in the comments!
